DIONYSIUS OF HALICARNASSUS (fl. 30-8 BCE). Antiquitates Romanae. Translated by Lampugninus Biragus. Treviso: Bernardinus Celerius, 24 or 25 February 1480.
First edition of the classic Greek history of Ancient Rome. Dionysius of Halicarnassus relates the history of Rome from its legendary beginnings to the First Punic War. The translator states in his postscript that his translation is based on two manuscripts from the library of Pope Paul II, to whom he dedicated the work. This edition was the first dated book to be issued from the itinerant printer Celerius's Treviso press. At least six variant issues of the colophon and the paragraph preceding it have been recorded, but no priority of issue has been established. Chancery folio (281 x 201mm). 298 leaves (of 300, without blanks). 2 red initials (some worming at ends, some leaves toned, small corner repair to first leaf, some light dampstaining and dustsoiling). 18th-century red morocco, gilt-stamped spine, gilt edges (light wear). Provenance: marginalia (some trimmed) – Paulus de Leliis (signature) – Giacomo Oranzo (18th-century ownership inscription).
