First edition of the sermons of Dominican preacher William Perault, in a contemporary binding. After studying at the University of Paris, Perault entered monastic life in Lyon, where he distinguished himself by his writing and preaching. He is perhaps best known for his work Summa de vitiis, a learned treatise on vices (and virtures). The printer, Johann Otmar, was one of the first printers at Reutlingen, but moved to Tübingen in 1497. H 8323*; BMC III 702; BSB-Ink G-521; Goff P-82; ISTC ip00082000.

Chancery folio (273 x 195mm). 389 leaves (of 390, without final blank). (Some spotting and browning, dampstaining, occasional wormholes.) Contemporary Freiberg blindstamped calf over wooden boards [Kyriss 173, EBDB w000104, Vogel-Rolle II], brass clasp, bosses, and cornerpieces, paper label on spine (lacking one clasp, losses to spine panels). Provenance: “Cornelius Viventi” (signature on title) – Ferdinand Graf von Egger (1802-1860, Industrialist in Klagenfurt; bookplate) – Robert Walsingham Martin (1871-1961; bookplate; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 12 November 1963, lot 385) – acquired from Bernard M. Rosenthal, New York, 1 November 1964.
