Rolewinck's Fasciculus temporum
Erhard Ratdolt, 1481
ROLEWINCK, Werner (1425-1502). Fasciculus temporum. [Venice:] Erhard Ratdolt, 21 December 1481.

Third Venetian and second Ratdolt edition, Thomas-Stanford copy. The text is a reprint of the earlier Venetian editions, but with the addition of a new note on the death (and descent to hell) of Sultan Mehmed II in May 1481. Most of the woodcuts are from the Ratdolt edition of the prior year, which includes some copies from Georgius Walch's first Venetian edition of 1479. Walch's blocks, based on the those of the Cologne editions, are noteworthy for replacing the view of Cologne with a woodcut of Venice. This cut of Venice is the first known printed view of that city, showing the Piazza San Marco as seen from the Gran' Canale. HC 6928*; BMC V 285; BSB-Ink R-242; Bod-inc R-115; IGI 8416; Essling 278; Goff R-264; ISTC ir00264000.

Super-chancery folio (302 x 204mm). 72 leaves. Woodcut initial colored in red, one blue Lombard, red capital strokes, many woodcuts and diagrams (small dampstain, some light dustsoiling). Modern brown morocco gilt with armorial of Thomas-Stanford by L. Broca (a little wear at extremities). Provenance: Charles Thomas-Stanford (1858-1932, British politician, author of Early Editions of Euclid, based on his own extensive collection; bookplate, collection sold en bloc to Rosenbach) – Boies Penrose (1902-1976, president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and nephew of U.S. Senator Boies Penrose; bookplate) – acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, Inc, New York, 5 March 1957.
