Aquinas's Super quarto libro Sententiarum
Johannes Herbort de Seligenstadt for Johannes de Colonia, Jenson et Socii, 1481
THOMAS AQUINAS (c.1225-1274). Super quarto libro Sententiarum. Venice: [Johannes Herbort de Seligenstadt] for Johannes de Colonia, Jenson et Socii, 24 June 1481.

Fourth edition, in a contemporary binding. Peter Lombard's Sentences, the standard textbook of theology at medieval universities, was the most commented upon work of Christian literature apart from the Bible itself—with no commentary being more important than that of Aquinas. This is his commentary on the fourth book, dealing with the sacraments which mediate God's grace. Herbort's establishment was one of the largest in Europe at the time, with all of his work for the firm of Johannes de Colonia et Nicolaus Jensen et Socii executed with Jensonian types (they had become their property upon Jenson's death). HC 1484*; BMC V 301; BSB-Ink T-266; Bod-inc T-157; Goff T-171; ISTC it00171000.

Super-chancery folio (311 x 205mm). 310 leaves. Printer’s device printed in red. Large red initial on a2, red Lombard initials with some brushwork decoration, red paragraph marks, woodcut device (some occasional stains and spots, more towards end, small hole in blank area of final leaf, repaired hole from removed stamp on a2, also interrupting monastic inscription on verso). Contemporary pink deerskin over wooden boards, brass catches, reused manuscript quire guard on first gathering, faint ink titles on fore-edge and bottom edge, green edges (rebacked in 18th-century calf, boards very worn and stained, straps defective, worming). Provenance: effaced monastic inscription (“Rhena…” 1733?) – acquired from Bernard M. Rosenthal, New York, 1 November 1964.
