The Cosmopolitan American Bar was located in the neighbourhood of the Madeleine at 4 rue Scribe beneath the Grand Hôtel. One of the many watering holes frequented by the artist, the proprietor, Achille Picton, insisted on addressing Lautrec with the artistocratic sobriquet 'Monsieur le Vicomte Marquis', much to the bohemian painter's amusement.
Of the edition of 25, Wittrock cites nine impressions in public collections. According to our records only three examples have been offered in the last three decades.
