Lot Essay

Described by The New York Times as "the most famous art critic in the world," Robert Hughes was recognized for his longstanding position with TIME magazine and his book and television series The Shock of the New. This project sought to address the development of modern art in a way that was both witty and accesible. Hughes was a great friend and admirer of Lucian Freud. The present lot was dedicated to Robert Hughes by the artist himself, as inscribed in the lower right margin.
