THE RE-DISCOVERED OLD SWISS WINE CELLAR
Edwin Vos, International Head of Wine Department
The following lots were recently discovered in a closed off part of a wine cellar. Originally laid down by the grand father and great grand father of the current owner. Over the years the key to this part of the wine cellar was lost and for decades nobody paid attention to this old stock. Up to the point that no one knew what was there. Earlier this year the door was opened and with astonishment the vinous treasures were discovered.
Over a fine dinner a number of wines were tasted. Revealing the excellent quality of not only the selected wines but also the fantastic cellar conditions.
From a remarkable strong Hospices de Beaune 1923 to a legendary great Cheval Blanc 1921, a refined Haut Brion 1893 and intriguing Yquem 1890 all were an absolute joy to drink. A memorable experience. Tasting notes I made are added to the lots.
These wines come with a high recommendation.
Château Haut-Brion 1893
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé
Believed Swiss bottled. Scuffed capsules. Very badly bin-soiled and damaged label. Four legible vintages. Levels: two mid/low-shoulder and four low-shoulder
Tasting note: Opened just before service from a bottle with mid-shoulder level: Very nice clear orange colour, beautiful and healthy.
A lace like structure, very much on the finesse and still in very good condition. Needed a bit of time to open up. Initially like a whisper so elegant. The nose revealed itself gently by the minute. High toned with small red fruits aromas and fine floral & tobacco note. Very lace like, fragile yet with strength. While the nose unfolded like a flower the taste directly revealed its aromas, broadening and super elegant with impressive symphonic refined after taste. After half an hour the taste faded out. What an amazing experience. March 2021. Edwin Vos.
