Founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for nearly 3 centuries. Following the French Revolution in 1789, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard seized this opportunity to expand the Domaine and secured vineyards that include the famous Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus. In 1838, Bouchard Père & Fils acquired 89 "ares" of Montrachet. In 1909, the Domaine bought more than 7 hectares in Grand Cru Le Corton, and in 1972 they purchased a parcel located in Grand Cru Chambertin. Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up the biggest vineyards in the Côte d’Or with 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru. Since 1820, Bouchard Père & Fils has been based in the heart of Beaune at the Beaune Castle, a royal fortress built in the 15th Century, whose galleries have been converted into cellars with ideal natural conditions for the storage of wines. Up to 10 metres deep, the wines develop and age undisturbed, including a unique collection of over 2,000 bottles from the 19th Century going back to 1842; some bottles of which Christie’s has had the privilege to offer for sale in the hugely successful Fine and Rare Wines Featuring Historic Vintages Direct From the Cellars of Bouchard Père & Fils auction in Hong Kong in September 2016. Highlights in this sale were historic and exceedingly rare bottles of Chambertin 1865 and Montrachet 1865 which sold for record prices. Bouchard Père & Fils produces a vast array of wines from their vineyards and négociant business including from the following prestigious appellations: Bâtard-Montrachet, Bonnes-Mares, Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Chevalier-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte, Clos Vougeot, Corton-Charlemagne, Echézeaux, Le Corton, Montrachet, and Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus. In 2005 following a significant financial investment the Domaine opened a new winery and cellars in Savigny-les-Beaune called Saint-Vincent. The new facility enables the Domaine to vinify over 100 different wines which flow from tanks to barrels by gravity, avoiding as much pumping as possible thus protecting the wines. The Domaine have the capability to house 4,000 oak barrels to mature their fantastic wines. Their superb and rare Montrachet Grand Cru from the Domaine’s 0.89 hectares in this fabled vineyard is typically aged for between 12 to 13 months in French oak, with up to 15% new oak, depending on the vintage.
