Domaine Leroy is undoubtedly in the very top tier of Burgundy producers; up there with DRC, Henri Jayer, Armand Rousseau and Georges Roumier to name a few. Domaine Leroy’s wines are highly-sought after which is no surprise as they are some of the most thrilling and vibrant expressions of Burgundian wines available on the planet and production volumes are small. Lalou Bize-Leroy began working for her family's négociant business, Maison Leroy. In 1988 Lalou Bize-Leroy purchased Domaine Charles Nöellat in Vosne-Romanée and renamed it Domaine Leroy. This acquisition included plots in the Grand Cru vineyards of Richebourg, Romanée St-Vivant and Clos de Vougeot and 1er Cru Vignerondes and Boudots in Nuits-Saint Georges and Beaumonts and Brulées in Vosne. The following year plots in Clos de la Roche, Latricières-Chambertin and Le Chambertin were bought from Domaine Philippe Rémy, and subsequently more vineyards have been added to the Domaine. Domaine Leroy owns parcels in 9 Grands Crus: Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Renardes, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, Clos de la Roche, Latricières-Chambertin and Chambertin. Lalou Bize-Leroy has been a proponent of biodynamic viticulture for many years. Domaine Leroy has adhered to the principles of biodynamic viticulture since 1989. They do not use any weed killers, pesticides, fungicides, insecticides or artificial fertilizers in their vineyards. The Domaine has a high proportion of old vines, and combined with the training, pruning and crop-thinning methods and the strict selection and sorting at harvest, results in very low yields, reputed to be on average 16 hectolitres per hectare. Incredibly low yields produce wines that are superbly concentrated and expressive, meaning that Domaine Leroy has come to be regarded by many as one of the finest producers in Burgundy. Michel Bettane wrote in Vins de France that “Domaine Leroy is a welcome reminder of the difference between the very good and the great”. Robert M. Parker stated that “Lalou Bize-Leroy stands alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration". As well as Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée, Lalou Bize-Leroy also produces superlative wines from Domaine d’Auvenay named after her home near St-Romain and the original négociant business, Maison Leroy based in Auxey-Duresses.
