Lot Essay

"Equalling records, doing something that hasn't been done for a long time, it's really nice, no doubt. Wow, you know, not having dropped a set. It's quite amazing." (Roger Federer, AP, 2007)

Following his most successful season to-date, Roger knew that a further Grand Slam success at the 2007 Australian Open would take him into double figures for majors won and leave him just four behind Pete Sampras’ record. He would proceed to sweep aside all challenges to his crown en route to the final, notching a first Grand Slam victory over Novak Djokovic and a semi-final win against Andy Roddick.

In the final, Roger would face Fernando González, who was appearing in his debut Grand Slam final and despite the Chilean taking him to a first set tie-break, Roger prevailed 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. With this victory, he became the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win a Slam without dropping a set and the first to achieve this incredible feat on a hard court.
