The present pastel depicts the garden of Max Liebermann's house, built for him in 1909, by architect Paul Otto Baumgarten, on the banks of Berlin’s Lake Wannsee. The same view appears in various, well-celebrated oil paintings (Eberle 1918/19-21 and 1919/24). Liebermann loved his villa and its garden so much, he decided to illustrate them on the header of his letter paper.
