First edition of Hawthornes masterwork. In spite of its controversial subject matter, The Scarlet Letter was an immediate success, selling 2,500 copies within its first week of publication and lifting Hawthorne out of literary obscurity. Octavo. Four pages of publisher’s advertisements; title printed in red and black. Original brown blind-embossed cloth stamped in gilt (minute wear to corners, very light rubbing to covers); custom chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Anson Jones (early ownership signature to title-page) – Jane Engelhard (her sale, 27 October 1995, lot 63).
