Lot Essay

Pete Rose's place in the history of the game of baseball will be debated for generations. His brand of fiery play and constant hustle on the diamond earned him the reputation as one of the most revered players to ever step foot on a field. His career has also endured several controversies: none larger then the scandal that involved Rose betting on baseball games, which ultimately cost him with a lifetime ban from the sport.
Offered is a Pete Rose Mizuno PR4291 model bat measuring 34" in length and weighing 32 oz. The bat exhibits excellent use including ball marks, stitching impressions and period handle tape. Number "14" in white marker found on both the knob end and top of the barrel end. The contact area of the barrel has been sanded and Rose has autographed the barrel in white marker as well. Upon close inspection, the top of the barrel has an area which appears "raised" typically found when a bat is drilled and "corked" to give a batter an advantage in hitting with a lighter bat. Upon the discovery of this suspect John Taube of PSA/DNA had the bat placed in x-ray (print out included) which confirmed the presence of an interior foreign substance consistent to be from "corking" of a bat. Furthermore, the bat is accompanied by a cover from the August 19, 1985 Sports Illustrated picturing Rose using the offered bat. The magazine cover is signed in gold, "To Eric, Take care of this bat, Pete Rose". Also accompanying the bat is a xerox copy of a receipt dated April 6, 2000 from legendary NL Umpire Eric Gregg who had sold the bat (along with other memorabilia) for Alan "Mr. Mint" Rosen. The receipt is signed by Gregg who denotes, "I Eric Gregg have sold Alan Rosen my Eric Gregg pers collection of game used bats, ball, gloves, etc. I certify whatever Mr. Rosen sells of mine is totally authentic, Eric Gregg." It has been previously speculated that Rose in fact did use corked bats towards the later portion of is career with a scant few other specimens having been discovered. Very unique, interesting, and tragically significant game used bat from a significant figure in the history of the game. Includes LOA from PSA/DNA (GU 9.5), Signed Sports Illutsrated cover to Eric Gregg, Xerox copy of the April 2000 Erig Gregg receipt to Mr. Mint, Xerox copy of image picturing Gregg with Mr. Mint, X-ray print out showing corking of bat interior barrel, and LOA from JSA (Rose signatures on bat/magazine): EX
