Significant original mounted image taken on Dec. 27, 1915 picturing a 21 year old Babe Ruth standing behind the rails alongside his father George in his Baltimore tavern. Babe Ruth had just won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox and upon his return to Baltimore it is believed that he used his proceeds from the World Series ($3,780.25) to purchase the bar for his father in an effort to mend some fences between the two. The image is most likely the opening of the refurbished establishment at which the younger Ruth was working during the off season and is decorated for the holidays. Exemplary detail is visible in this sepia tone image from the glasses behind the bar to the cigar in George Sr.'s hand. Color lithographic calendar hangs on the wall with customized "Babe Ruth's Cafe" titling printed at bottom. Condition is very fine with strong contrast and image clarity. Small 2" vertical surface blemish in the background area of top left edge is noted with remainder of image showing typical light surface wear. The photo remains affixed to its original cabinet mount with "V.Velvis Studio" photographer's stamp at lower right. Top and bottom edges have been slightly trimmed likely to fit within a period frame at one point. The photo measures 8"x10" with overall mount size of 11"x13 3/4" 1/4"x9 1/2". This particular copy originated from a noted Baltimore region collection and is being offered for the first time publicly. One of only a minute surviving population of this iconic early Babe Ruth image. Includes period xerox copy of a 1918 news account detailing Ruth's father's passing from a family fight outside the tavern which was found with the photo: VG-EX
