Lot Essay

Perfectly composed sepia tone captures Babe Ruth in full follow through with catcher and umpire staring in admiration. Photo measures 6"x9.5" with only light wear largely confined to corners/edges. Handwritten notations on back relay that it was taken during a 1929 exhibition game at Oriole Park and appear to be in Merriken's hand. LeRoy Merriken was with a photographer with the Baltimore Sun from 1924-1980. His focus on sports began with the first image he took of Babe Ruth posing with the International League Baltimore Orioles in 1914.
