Lot Essay

Matted and framed 7 1/2"x27" original sepia tone image taken on October 17, 1927 at Western League Ball Park in Des Moines, Iowa. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were barnstorming their way across the country and in particular the Midwest after the 1927 season in order to make some additonal revenue and promote their marketing brand. The teams were titled "Bustin Babes" and "Larrupin Lous" with Ruth and Gehrig playing alongside local town and semi pro players along their trip. This particular image captures the two Yankee sluggers posed at the center of the photo standing in full uniform with their respective teammates flanking on both sides. Image is titled in white at bottom margin by Des Moines photographer and retains exceptional contrast with powerful display qualities. The photo has some professional conservation to several vertical crease lines which frequently occur on such images froom having been stored in scroll fashion and then unrolled. The technical grade due to the scrolling crease lines does not conveny the very fine visual eye appeal of this notably rare memorialization of the iconic barnstorming tour. One of only a very small group of known examples and the first to appear in the market in a number of years: VG (EX eye apppeal)
