Zadeh al-Rumi was born in Bursa, but was transferred to Samarqand by Timur where he worked and died. He was one of the leading astronomers at the observatory in Samarqand and taught Ulugh Beg astronomy. He was buried in the royal mausoleum by Ulugh Beg himself.

There are seventeen known copies of this work in the British Library, the earliest of which is dated AH 824/1421 AD (see P. Stocks & C. Baker, Subject Guide to the Arabic Manuscripts in the British Library, London, 2001, pp.380-1, M5). Our manuscript, dated to 1417-18 AD, is the earliest known copy of the work written during the lifetime of the author who died around 1436 AD.
