This illustration belongs to a Baramasa series showing the month of shravana, which marks the arrival of the monsoon.
The arrival of the monsoon and depictions of lovers seated watching the approaching storm clouds is a common theme amongst Pahari painters; good examples can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. 1973.104) and Minneapolis Institute of Art (inv. 92.102). Similar illustrations have been sold at Sotheby’s on 07 October 2015, lot 291, and Bonhams, 17 September 2014, lot 127. Meanwhile another similar scene from Kangra or Guler was sold in these Rooms, 18 September 2013, lot 361.
