For a description of early Ottoman candlesticks see the previous lot. However, in comparison to the previous lot, this candlestick is notable for its use of calligraphic decoration which is rare. The majority of known examples from the period employ plain decoration, such as those in the Aga Khan Museum (2017.2.1) and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (M.2002.1.12), and others, such as the previous lot, exhibit chiselled arabesques. Another early Ottoman candlestick with calligraphy was sold at Sotheby's 1 April 2009, lot 166.
