Thought to have been executed shortly after Clausen's move to Childwick Green in 1881, this intimate domestic watercolour is typical of his early work and demonstrates his closeness at this time to James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). The model is probably his wife, Agnes Mary Webster.
We are grateful to Professor Kenneth McConkey for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
