Lot Essay

‘There is something about these people that is remarkable, you know. They have a look in their eye. You wonder what they are really looking at. There is mystery about them. I am compelled to try and draw them. I wonder all the time: what is their life?'
L.S. Lowry

The present example is a charming single figure study of a standing woman. The coloured background of this work is a rare and very distinctive feature of the work. Lowry usually painted a white background behind his figure studies, to depict an outdoor setting, whereas this woman is standing in an interior, denoted by the strongly coloured environment in which she is standing.
