Like Man Ray, Raoul Ubac experimented with various techniques and from 1939 he created a “Brulage” (Burnt) series which consisted of putting his glass-plate negatives into emulsion that was heated. Under the effect of the heat, the sensitive surface would melt and would create, by chance, an intriguing image. A typical Surrealist gesture from this multi-faceted artist.
Other examples of this image are in the Centre Pompidou Museum in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
