H.M. Borges, Madeira Terrantez 1877
Madeira
Damaged wax capsule. Stencilled bottle. Level: into-neck
Tasting note: Many notes since 2013. In demi-john bottled a week before for this tasting. Believed to be transferred from cask to demi-john around 1900. From the Borges reserves.
Very nice nose of vintage wax, leather and faint floral scent. After a while more aromas appeared, aniseed and fennel. Full rich taste in final somewhat tight. Old furniture wax. Nice taste though for now the wine presents itself more on the nose.
Later in the year double decanted 9 hours before a master class pre-sale in NY. This was one of the greatest wines in a series of 18. Beautiful balance and length. Great wine! Beeswax, backward nose, dried fruits, nicely concentrated, sweet expression coming out, very complex. Makes you want to pick up your glass and go back. Fine taste, elegant, grapefruit bitterness, lovely refined. Lighter elegant taste. The nose is most attractive compared to a good taste. Very good wine.
Then four years later at the Borges lodges still showing its magnificent quality. Directly drawn from demi-john. Amazingly complex nose. Expressive molasses and spices aromas, high extract, caramel. All jumping from the glass. Love this so much. Big expanding taste with a lovely intensity and phenomenal acidity. A legendary wine!
Two years later a Demi john sample at the lodge. The founding year of the company.
Oily nose, fine fruits with old wood and furniture wax aromas. On the taste the same waxy oily aromas, more strict then I remember. After half an hour the oily petrol aromas faded more, bringing up the rich apricot fruit and Indian spices.
The fruit and aroma explosion on the after taste bring you back to the initial high quality. All rich blood orange fruits with a red grapefruit aroma on the final. Needs time to open up. Still a high quality Terrantez. Fine purity of fruit here, love this wine very much.
Two days later showing more intense banana leaf aromas, waxy, quite rich, more caramel and fudge notes. On the taste more expansive, very refined sweet, almost like a violin so elegant and super attractive. Great wine! Last tasted April 2021. Edwin Vos
