A RARE LARGE CINNABAR LACQUER ‘SHOU CHARACTERS’ CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1763-1795)
The flattened top of the cover is carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer to a dark brown ground with a central medallion depicting five bats in flight around a Shou character, encircled by a narrow band of sanduo fruits, two bands of Shou characters in different styles, and a band of melons and butterflies at the rim. The sides are further carved with two bands of Shou characters between a band of ruyi lappets and a band of lingzhi scroll. The box is similarly carved on the sides with Shou characters.
