The Property of Lady Dorothy Nevill
by direct descent
Lady Dorothy Nevill (1826-1913) was the youngest daughter of Horatio Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford. She grew up at Wolterton Hall which had been built for the first Lord Walpole in 1727 and took great pride in her ancestry, having a particular fascination for her kinsman, Horace Walpole of Strawberry Hill. It was not therefore suprising that she should develop a passion for collecting. She was a hostess of great distinction and accomplishment but also an author, painter, illustrator, gardener and collector, filling albums and notebooks with letters, caricatures, photographs and memorabilia evoking the political, literary and social life of the day. She was able to count Edward VII, Disraeli, Dickens and Oscar Wilde among her friends. The following lots are mementoes of her extraordinary life and give a fascinating insight into Victorian high society.
