ROBERT, LORD BADEN-POWELL (1857-1941)
A 4-page autograph letter, signed, on Government of India embossed headed paper, from Meemt, 25th January 1884, to Henry Blaghorne, asking for Corporal Jackson's papers and stating: "I received your letter about the helmets not fitting: of course it can't be helped when they chop and change the men for India at the last moment." He discusses various social events and entertainments including a game of polo: "We played Meemt Station and Camp, the other day: Ding-Braithwaite, the Boy and Self -- and got 8 goals to their O," in original stamped addressed envelope. With a letter from Corporal Jackson requesting a Good Conduct Medal (forwarded to Powell by Colonel Sir B.C. Russel) and another letter relating to Jackson from W. Anstruther-Thomson. (3)

Lot Essay

"Boy" is Lt. Kenneth McLaren of the 13th Hussars who was then 20 though Baden-Powell nicknamed him "Boy" or "the Boy" owing to his still younger appearance.
