Details
In 1725 Château Pontet-Canet was purchased by Jean François Pontet. The winery has since then only been run by two other families, a rarity for a Bordeaux estate. A marked injection of quality for the Estate’s wines occurred when the Tesseron family, of Cognac fame, purchased it in 1975. Currently run by Alfred Tesseron, alongside winemaker Jean-Michel Comme, lower yields generate great quality. Although classified a 5th growth in 1855, Pontet-Canet produces a far higher quality than its rank, noted by Robert Parker as an ‘over-performing Pauillac fifth growth’. The grapes represent a classic blend for the Left Bank in Bordeaux with the dominant grape of Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), coupled with biodynamic viticulture, having been granted Agency Bio (AB) organic certification in 2010 as the first major Bordeaux wine producer to do so.
