PETRUS
Originally belonging to the Arnaud family during the 19th century. Petrus came into ownership of Madame Loubat, wife of the owner of the Hôtel Loubat in Libourne in 1949, after she gained majority stake of the company when the estate started offering shares in the company to the public. Today the 11.5 hectares of Petrus are owned by Jean-François Moueix whose father acquired a majority share from Loubat’s descendants in 1964. The vineyard itself is located in Pomerol on a plateau dominated by iron-rich clay soils that give the wines their structure and create a cooler mesoclimate by retaining some water and reducing hydric stress. This cooler mesoclimate is ideally suited to the early ripening Merlot, which comprises 95% of the wine (the remaining 5% being Cabernet Franc). The utmost care is taken in the vineyard, where the practice of strict green harvesting is employed to limit yields. The well renowned estate has been praised by critics, with Stephen Brook writing in The Complete Bordeaux “the name, Pétrus conjures up Bordeaux at its most splendid, most rarified, and most luxurious….. Petrus is a sumptuous wine”.
