CASTELLARE DI CASTELLINA
Castellare di Castellina, located in Castellina in Chianti near Siena, has 90 hectares of land of which 33 are vineyards (plus another 12 hectares for rent), at 370 metres above sea level on the hills of a natural amphitheatre, with a terrain comprising calcareous marls, galestro, and stones. The Castellare di Castellina winery was created by Paolo Panerai in the 1970’s with a production philosophy that is based on tradition, innovation and respect for the environment. The total production at the Estate is around 250,000 bottles a year of red and white wines. From the beginning a census of the vines envisaged the existence of several old plants of Sangioveto, a noble native clone version on Sangiovese that was planted in Castellina area at the end of 19th century. The philosophy of Castellare is to focus of Sangiovese’s potential and to promote the authentic Chianti Classico style through a loyalty to the autochthonous vine species: Sangioveto combined with small amounts of Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Nera, respecting the authentic tradition of Chianti’s terroir in Castellina in Chianti.
Their flagship wine and most important expression of Castellare is I Sodi di San Niccolò: the highest selection of a single vineyard planted with a majority of Sangioveto and few vines of Malvasia Nera. It is the proof that the native varieties of the area give a wine with the highest international standards, a great wine with a real Tuscan personality and the capability to compete with many other Super Tuscans. The typical blend is 85% Sangioveto and 15% Malvasia Nera aged in French oak barriques for between 12 to 18 months.
I Sodi di S. Niccolò was the first Italian wine to be included in Wine Spectator's 1988 Top 100 with the 1985 vintage; and again in 1989 with the 1986. With the 2016 vintage, for the second time (previously with the 2013), I Sodi became the “Best Italian Red” wine by adding the ratings awarded by the 5 Italian leading wine guides and the 4 most authoritative world critics.
Their philosophy of respect for the environment is reflected by the labels, which each year boast a drawing of a different bird found to be increasingly rare due to the indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides. Since 1977 the iconic birds depicted on Castellare’s bottles have changed every year (except for 1985 and 1995 vintages) to pay homage to the several endangered species in the region.

Tasting note: Sangioveto (85%) & Malvasia Nera (15%). Youthful aromatics with intense plum, red and black cherry fruit aromas with nuances of blackberry. Hints of violet fragrance with a dried herbal character with notes of dried sage and liquorice. Cinnamon and spice notes from the well-integrated use of oak. Full bodied and rich flavours of sour cherry and blackberry and plum. Has the characteristic high acidity associated with clones of Sangiovese with fine grained chalky tannins. A well balanced age-worthy Tuscan red with fruit concentration and freshness which will benefit from further bottle evolution. Drink 2024-2040. Tasted October 2021. Tim Triptree MW
