PRISTINE CASES OF MASSETO
The vast potential of this formerly unused hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea on Italy’s Tuscan Coast remained undiscovered until the 1980s when the first vines were planted. In tribute to their rugged force, Masseto was named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay called ‘massi’ that form on the vineyard’s surface and gave the vines their strength. The Masseto vineyard is owned by the Frescobaldi family, who have a history of 700 years in wine. Alongside Axel Heinz as the Estate Director, Masseto is run with a philosophy of doing as little as possible to the wines, meaning that the challenging vineyard is offset with the great simplicity of the production process.
