Lot Essay

These two etchings were published in the Thurnier Buech warhafftiger ritterlicher Thaten, so in dem Monat Junii des vergangnen LX. Jars in und ausserhalb der Statt Wienn zu Rosz und zu Fueß, auff Waser und Lannd gehalten worden, by Hanns von Francolin and published by Raphael Hofhalter in Vienna in 1561. The book describes and illustrates on seven large, folded etchings the festivities, tournaments and sham battles arranged for the future Emperor Maximilian II on occasion of the visit of his father Ferdinand I and his brother-in-law Albrecht V of Bavaria in June 1560 in Vienna.
