Modelés au naturel en miroir, ils sont représentés debouts, l'un tournant la tête vers la gauche, l'autre vers la droite, la queue rabattue contre leur flanc. Ils portent sur leur dos un luxueux tapis de selle orné de rinceaux et caractères shou où repose un vase archaïsant de forme gu décoré de fleurs de lotus roses sur fond jaune et bleu, le bord supérieur rehaussé d'une frise de grecques sur fond vert pâle.

Longueur: 26,5 cm. (10 3⁄8 in.) ; socles en bois

The imagery of an elephant carrying a vase represents the rebus taiping youxiang, which can be translated as 'may there be a peaceful reign'. This auspicious theme can be seen not only in porcelain, but also in various media such as cloisonné enamel, metalwork, jade, and painting. A similar pair of elephants dated to the Qianlong period was sold at Christie's London, 9 May 2017, lot 95.
