Christie's would like to thank François Le Tacon for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.

This extraordinary handled coupe, or petite “jardinière” as Gallé called it, is part of the limited series “Les Veilleuses”, notable for its spectacular glass marquetry colchicum or autumn crocus. This series, created in 1897, was marketed in 1898. The marqueterie-sur-verre technique was a glass technique inspired by wood marquetry and developed by Gallé in the 1890s. During the heating process, the artist pressed shapes of cut glass into the surface of the object. Once the surface had cooled, it could be engraved or embellished with applications of glass. The Colchique motif, particularly striking on the present lot and beautifully complemented by the sinuous shape of the handles, was seen by Gallé as a symbol of melancholic beauty.

Two drawings of this model are in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris (inv. ARO 1986 756, and ARO 1986 797)
