Born in Halifax, Vermont, James Guild was a traveling peddler, tinker, penmanship teacher and likeness and miniature painter. He is known for his detailed diary which he kept from 1818-1824. This gives insight into the life of an itinerant at the time. The present lot is one of only a few pieces signed by Guild. It exhibits a shift is his works from simple profiles to full length detailed portraits. For further information on Guild see Arthur B. and Sybil B.
