Robert Frederick Blum's Italian paintings are among his finest mature works. He first traveled to Venice in 1880 and later lived there from 1885-86, when he produced his most famous work, Venetian Lace Makers (1885-86, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, Ohio). He returned several times throughout the decade, producing etchings, pastels and oils such as the present example.
