Lot Essay

The four-armed god Vishnu rides comfortably on his vehicle, the anthropomorphized bird Garuda. Garuda’s wise eye, downturned beak and feathered skin are all executed in exquisite detail. Two woman await the duo's landing with bowls burning with incense. Compare the painting to a similar Rajasthani work in the Edwin Binney III Collection at the San Diego Museum of Art (acc. no. 1990.683), depicting Vishnu and Lakshmi riding atop Garuda in the night sky.
