Lot Essay

Graham Sutherland was so moved by his time in Wales, that he bequeathed a number of works to a dedicated Sutherland Trust in 1976, held at Picton Castle, Pembrokeshire, where he specified the paintings be seen in the place which had inspired them.

Sir Nicholas Goodison commented: ‘The winding disappearing lane was a preoccupation in the late 1930s of both Sutherland and John Craxton, who painted with him in Pembrokeshire. Sometimes there is a solitary figure, but in this case the lane is deserted, suggesting even greater mystery.’
