ATTRIBUTED TO PIER FRANCESCO MOLA, SAINT FRANCIS RECEIVING THE STIGMATA, RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH
This is a preparatory study for a painting on marble of the former collection of Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597-1679), rediscovered in a sale at Christie's London on December 9, 1994, lot 53, then sold a second time at auction, this time at Sotheby's, on February 1, 2013, lot 48. It is probably a reduced version of the altar piece of the Hospital of the Beggars in Rome, destroyed but described in Giovanni Francesco Mola's travel diary of 1663 (R. Cocke, Pier Francesco Mola, Oxford, 1972, p. 72, L.5).
There are two other red chalk studies that can be related to this painting, in which the position of the saint is different: one that has come up on the Parisian art market, the other housed in the Frick Art & Historical Centre, Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh collects: European Drawings, 1500 to 1800, exh. cat., Pittsburgh, Frick Art & Historical Centre, 2004-2005, no. 23).

Lot Essay
