LUCA GIORDANO, STUDY OF TWO HIPPOCAMPS, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK ON A SQUARED SHEET
In this drawing Luca Giordano depicts two hippocamps with their tails intertwined standing at the edge of an architectural frame. The two animals are similarly painted in the fresco of the Marriage of Neptune and Amphitrite, part of the monumental decoration of the Galleria degli Specchi in Palazzo Medici Ricciardi in Florence (O. Ferrari, G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano. Opera Completa, Naples, 1992, I, p. 27). The important decoration, representing an elaborate allegory of the apotheosis of the Medici family, was executed by the artist between 1682 and 1685.

Dans ce dessin, Luca Giordano a représenté deux hippocampes aux queues entrelacées, au bord d'un cadre architectural. Les deux animaux sont peints de façon similaire dans la fresque murale du Mariage de Neptune et Amphitrite de la Galleria degli Specchi du Palazzo Medici Ricciardi à Florence (O. Ferrari, G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano. Opera Completa, Naples, 1992, I, p. 27). L'importante décoration, qui représente une allégorie de la famille Médicis, a été exécutée par l'artiste entre 1682 et 1685.
