MAERTEN DE COCK, LANDSCAPE WITH AN HERMIT AND A FORTIFIED CASTLE ON THE HILL, PEN AND BROWN INK, BLUE AND GREEN WASH

Previously attributed to the printmaker and publisher Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), this drawing can be attributed to the eponymous but later landscapist Marten de Cock, who was mainly active as a draughtsman and who in his long life travelled to Copenhagen in 1625, to London in 1630, and later to Augsburg, where he died. Landscapes by him, some signed and dated, and in various degrees of finish, can be found at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1881-A-152, RP-T-1948-388, RP-T-1906-21; see M. Schapelhouman and P. Schatborn, Dutch Drawings of the Seventeenth Century in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Artists Born Between 1580 and 1600, Amsterdam and London, 1998, nos. 106-109, ill.); the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. 5539, 3771); the British Museum, London (inv. Anciennement attribué au graveur et éditeur Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), ce dessin a été réalisé par son éponyme, un paysagiste plus tardif, Marten de Cock, principalement actif comme dessinateur de paysage voyageant au cour de sa longue carrière à Copenhage en 1625, à Londres en 1630 puis enfin à Ausgsbourg où il décède. Plusieurs de ses paysages, certains signés et datés, plus ou moins aboutis, sont conservés, entre autres, au Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1881-A-152, RP-T-1948-388, RP-T-1906-21; voir M.
