Ce chapiteau à l’étonnante iconographie de chimères affrontées fit partie de la collection d’Adolphe Stoclet (1871-1949). Fils de Victor, directeur de la Société générale de Belgique, il hérita d’une fortune colossale construite dans les finances et les chemins de fer. Il fut lui même ingénieur et repris les fonctions de son père. Amoureux des arts, époux de la fille d’Arthur Stevens, marchand et critique d’art, il est le commanditaire du palais Stoclet, célèbre œuvre d’art totale, érigé à Bruxelles par l’architecte Josef Hoffmann de 1905 à 1911. Le couple hérita et acquit une riche et éclectique collection d’œuvres d’art.
