INTRATIONES
Intrationum excellentissimus liber per quam necessarius omnibus leges hominibus. London: Richard Pynson, February 1510.
First edition of a major English legal text, The Intrationum liber with interesting contemporary provenance. The ‘Book of Entries’, as it was also known, was one of the essential legal texts for the early practice of law. It comprises the precedents for most forms of legal proceedings then in use in personal and mixed actions, civil and criminal, as well as valuable information on the preparation of writs and execution. The anonymous author drew his material from the unpublished plea rolls, a fundamental source for English legal history. Pynson was one of the earliest English printers. He specialised in legal printing and became printer to the king. This copy was bought by a certain William Crofton from the premises of Pynson’s old shop when it was later occupied by Pynson’s main competitor in the production of law books, the printer and bookseller Robert Redman. William Crofton is likely to be the ‘Keeper of the wardrobe of the Prince’ or ‘Royal Hosier’ to Henry VIII who was also recorded in 1537 as a Bencher at the Inner Temple (see Henry Crofton, Crofton Memoirs, 1911 p. 33). ESTC S111999; STC 14116; Beale, Early English Law Books, Treatises T283.

Folio (335 x 240mm). Title printed in red and black with small woodcut, full-page woodcut of English Tudor royal arms on verso of title, woodcut initial with Tudor rose, Pynson’s large woodcut device [McKerrow 9] on verso of final leaf (small repair in lower margin of title, marginal spotting, particularly at beginning and end, dampstain to some edges). Early 19th-century diced russia, sides blind-ruled to diapered pattern, Tudor roses blind-stamped at centres (repair to joints and corners, and head and tail of spine). Provenance: William Crofton (contemporary autograph on title, his purchase note from London bookseller and printer Robert Redman on 15 February 1539 for 10 shillings) — Edmund Stradling (early autograph on verso of title) — Los Angeles Law Library (bookplate).
