This type of richly decorated jardinières may have been made for a jade and hardstone plant - a popular decoration within the imperial palace during the Qing dynasty. See a champleve jardinière with hardstone miniature tree in the collection of the Palace Museum of Beijing, under the inventory number Gu00125914 ; a closely related example, dated 18th century, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 19 May 2013, lot 2168.
