The first animal of the Chinese zodiac, the rat symbolizes vitality and fertility. Despite this significance, the rat remains an exceptionally rare subject in jade carvings. A celadon and black jade ‘rat’ toggle dated 17^th century was sold at Christie’s London, 15 May 2018, lot 49.
