Lot Essay

The Rialto Bridge in Venice was one of Giacomo Guardi’s preferred subjects, and a favorite of his clients. Several versions of the composition exist, among these is a sheet closely comparable to the present one in the Morgan Library and Museum in New York (inv. 1996.32). At the center of this view is the Rialto Bridge and on the left side the Riva del Vin, the area of the city where wine trading took place.
