The 'Townswoman' was likely a costume design for one of dancers in Maria Kuznetsova's (1880-1960) Spectacles d'art russe which premiered on 14 April 1922 at Théâtre Femina, Paris. It is also possible that this was an independent work that Bakst made for an exhibition at the Knoedler Gallery, New York in December 1922.
The costume design 'Peasant girl in bast shoes' is probably connected to the 1922 pantomime production Russian Fair of Maria Kuznetsova’s Spectacles d'art russe. Bakst made national costume designs for each member of the troupe, which he then reproduced in a larger format on higher quality paper for his New York exhibition in 1922, a quarter of which was dedicated to the Russian theme.
