A lavishly illustrated biography of Napoleon, this set in Cosway style bindings, each volume with a portrait miniature of either Napoleon or Josephine. The Napoleon portraits are after the artists Gerard and René.
Four volumes, octavo (217 x 133mm). 24 hand colored and 3 uncolored engraved folding plates by George Cruikshank after Vernet and others (one detached at fold, a color frontispiece nearly detached, very few spots). Full tangerine crushed levant morocco, covers with triple gilt-ruled border and leafy corner ornaments, each front cover inset with a hand-painted oval portrait miniature surrounded by a gilt wreath crowned with the initial “N” in inlaid blue morocco (vol. 3 portrait is on ivory, the others on ivorine or card), lower covers with gilt Napoleonic crests, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, board edges and turn-ins gilt, red moiré silk linings, all edges gilt, stamp-signed by the binders on upper turn-ins (some hinges weak, old ribbon markers are frayed); four padded clamshell boxes.
