The first appearance in print. This grisly tale about the anatomist K and his need for cadavers is based on the real-life career of physician Robert Knox, whose classroom was supplied by the victims of the Westport murders. It did not appear in book form for another 11 years.
Quarto (250 x 180mm). Illustrated with a wood-engraving by Morgan, captioned "A wild yell rang up into the night," repeated on upper wrapper. Later polished calf gilt, gilt monogram "RLS," with original front wrapper bound in (upper joint of calf cracked, front wrapper renewed at gutter margin and with repaired tears and a couple of chips). Provenance: Carolyn Tripp Clement (bookplate).
