First edition in book form. Originally published serially in Household Words, this work presents history from 50 BCE to Queen Victoria for young audiences. Later issue with date “December 1851” removed and “w” in “whom” present in the dedication. Eckel 128-129; Gimbel/Podeschi A128; Smith 75.

Three volumes, octavo. Half-titles, ad leaf at the back of each volume. 3 frontispieces by F. W. Topham. Original violet-pink blindstamped cloth with gilt vignette by Topham, end papers and edges marbled (spines lightly sunned, a little wear). Custom full morocco pull-off box.
