The Suzannet copy of the first edition in book form, in its first binding. “This controversial book, the shortest of Dickens’ novels, takes up issues of industrialism and education and offers a moral fable challenging some of the dominant ideologies of the Victorian era.” (Davis). Octavo. Half-title (some toning, one fold unopened). Original blindstamped green cloth, gilt lettering on spine, pale-yellow coated endpapers (minor staining, hinge repaired, sunned spine). Provenance: Kenneth H.M. Connal (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby’s 24 November 1921, lot 449) - Alain de Suzannet, 1882-1950 (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby’s 22 November 1971, lot 113) - sold Christie’s East, 21 February 1996 lot 78.
